The United Nations General Assembly officially designated the period from 2018 to 2028 as the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development”, also known as the Water Action Decade. This initiative is a critical response to the urgent need to address the global water crisis that affects billions of people and threatens the sustainable development of the entire planet.

Objectives of the Water Action Decade

The main objective of the Water Action Decade is to advance water-related goals and targets that are crucial for the achievement of long-term sustainable development. The decade focuses on enhancing cooperation, partnership, and capacity development in the water domain. Its overarching aim is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Key Challenges Addressed by the Decad

SDG GOAL 6

  1. Water Scarcity: One of the primary issues at hand is the global challenge of water scarcity. It is estimated that by 2030, the world will face a 40% shortfall in freshwater resources if current water consumption patterns continue. The Water Action Decade aims to promote more efficient water usage practices, enhanced water recycling, and innovative water conservation technologies.
  1. Improved Access to Water and Sanitation: Despite progress, billions still lack safe water and sanitation facilities. The Decade seeks to accelerate efforts to ensure everyone has access to clean drinking water and adequate sanitation services, which are essential for reducing the spread of deadly diseases and improving quality of life.
  1. Protection of Water Resources: The protection and restoration of water-related ecosystems such as forests, mountains, wetlands, rivers, aquifers, and lakes are also prioritized. These efforts are vital for maintaining the natural hydrological cycles and supporting biodiversity which in turn helps in climate regulation and provides resilience to natural disasters.

Strategic Approaches

  1. Cooperation and Partnerships: Realizing the ambitious goals of the Water Action Decade requires global cooperation and solid partnerships between governments, international organizations, civil society, the private sector, and other stakeholders. The Decade emphasizes the importance of transboundary cooperation in managing shared water resources to promote peace and sustainable development.
  1. Innovation and Technology: Innovation is crucial for solving complex water issues. The Decade promotes the development and deployment of new technologies for water purification, desalination, and waste treatment. Smart water management and data-driven technologies are encouraged to optimize water usage and to improve decision-making processes.
  1. Capacity Building and Education: Building the capacities of nations, communities, and individuals is another key area of focus. Education and training programs are essential for equipping people with the skills needed to manage water sustainably. Moreover, public awareness campaigns help to increase knowledge about the importance of water conservation.
